The works comprise the capital replacement of 7.5 Mw of coal fired boiler systems, along with single oil fired boiler with gas fired heating plant. These works occur across three main buildings within the campus arrangement. Key works delivered around the central boiler house including modifications to previous coal store for new plant and equipment.
The infrastructure works are carried out on a live site and full temporary services had to be in place to ensure the operation of this critical establishment was not compromised.
The project incorporated full off site fabrication to ensure site time was kept to a minimum and that works could be undertaken in parallel with asbestos, demolition and enabling works. The aim of the project is to reduce the energy consumption and subsequent carbon emission from the operations of the site heating and hot water requirements.
This is to be achieved through the introduction of new gas fired boiler system arrangements, along with introducing a gas fired CHP generator, new BMS controls and associated metering.
To enable the provision of the new gas fired plant major new gas services infrastructure networks are required to be bought on site, along with the provision of a new transformer and on site HV works to incorporate the power generation from the CHP system.
Additionally, upgrade of a section of the existing site district heating main arrangement is required to support the provision of a direct connection to serve heat exchangers in replacement of an existing oil boiler serving the swimming pool and leisure facilities on site.
The project has been delivered using a full 3D integrated model, BIM technology using Revit MEP and is the first project for the public sector client to be delivered using these techniques.
